Mideast Evangelical Church PC (USA)
Past, Present and Future
The roots of this church go back many decades as almost all of the member were members and children of members of the Presbyterian Church in Egypt known as the Evangelical Church.
The Synod of the Nile of the Presbyterian Church in Egypt was concerned to establish a church in southern California to gather the Egyptians and the Arabic-speaking Christians residing in Los Angeles. After prayer and many visits, the first group began to gather for worship and Bible study.
The local fellowship started April 1988. A few years later the congregation was ready for the organization of the first Arabic-speaking Presbyterian Church in the western United States. The Reverend Adel Iskander was invited as an organizing pastor in June 1992.
The church was registered by the Presbytery of San Gabriel on December 5, 1994, by accepting the charter members and installing and ordaining the elders and deacons. The By-Laws were drafted and passed. The State of California recognized this new addition to the Presbytery of San Gabriel, and it was incorporated in the State of California on March 28, 1995.
The Lord chose to call the organizing pastor to glory in April 1995. After prayers, fasting and much deliberation, the members of the church invited the Reverend Magdy Girgis to be their pastor. He began working in July 1997.
The ministry of the church is directed mainly to the 400,000 Middle Easterners, of whom 40% are Christians, located in the Los Angeles area. The church’s mission project is seeking to address the concerns of this large population (including especially the needs of youth and women.) With the support of the General Assembly, the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii, and the Presbytery of San Gabriel, this church has been developing into a strong presence and witness among the thousands of Arabic-speaking Middle Easterners in this metropolitan area.
People from all countries of the Middle East who come as immigrants to California can join our church, learn about and grow in the fellowship and knowledge of Jesus Christ, and share our mission.
On March 19, 2006, our church moved to its new location to share God’s House of Worship with Calvary Presbyterian Church after 18 years of nesting at Westminster Presbyterian Church of Pasadena. We consider this last move as God’s leading to both Calvary and Mideast Church to work together for His glory. We expect great things in the near future as we move together in harmony and cooperation in ministry.
We are looking forward to working with the body of Jesus Christ to minister to our local community, spreading the good news to all who are seeking the Kingdom of God.
